Everything you need to know to plan a smooth, enjoyable trip to Kosovo.

🛂 Visa & Entry

  • Citizens of EU, US, UK, and most Western countries can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
  • A valid passport is required. Some nationalities need a visa — check with Kosovo's embassy.
  • Entry is via Pristina International Airport (PRN), or by road from North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, or Serbia.
  • Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's independence — crossing from Serbia may be complicated.

💶 Currency & Money

  • Kosovo uses the Euro (€) even though it is not an EU member.
  • ATMs are widely available in cities. Most restaurants and hotels accept cards.
  • Small shops, rural areas, and taxis may be cash-only.
  • Kosovo is very affordable — budget €30–50/day for a comfortable stay.

🚗 Getting Around

  • Renting a car is the best way to explore — roads are decent and traffic is light outside Pristina.
  • Buses connect all major cities for €2–5 per trip.
  • Taxis are cheap in cities — €2–5 for most trips. Use the "Taxi App Kosovo" or negotiate fare before riding.
  • Pristina International Airport is only 18km from the city center.

🗣️ Language

  • Albanian is the primary language. Serbian is also official.
  • English is widely spoken by younger people, especially in cities.
  • A few words in Albanian will go a long way: Faleminderit (Thank you), Mirëmëngjes (Good morning), Ju lutem (Please).

🛡️ Safety

  • Kosovo is generally very safe for tourists. Petty crime is low.
  • Standard precautions apply — watch your belongings in crowded markets.
  • Emergency number: 112 (Police, Fire, Ambulance).
  • Traffic can be chaotic in Pristina — be cautious as a pedestrian.

📅 Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (April–June): Best weather, everything is green, fewer tourists.
  • Summer (July–August): Hot and lively, peak festival season.
  • Autumn (Sept–Oct): Mild weather, harvest season, beautiful colors.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold but Brezovica ski resort opens. Pristina's Christmas market is lovely.

🏥 Health & Practical

  • No special vaccinations required for most visitors.
  • Tap water is generally safe to drink in cities.
  • Pharmacies (Barnatore) are well-stocked in cities.
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may not apply — travel insurance is recommended.
  • Power sockets: Type C/F (EU standard), 230V.

🤝 Cultural Tips

  • Kosovo is majority Muslim but highly secular. Dress code is relaxed.
  • When visiting mosques or Orthodox monasteries, cover your shoulders and remove shoes.
  • Hospitality is sacred — if invited to someone's home, always accept at least tea or coffee.
  • Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory — 10% is generous.
